uv An extremely fast Python package and project manager, written in Rust.

Overview

uv 0.12.17 is Astral's Rust CLI for installing, locking, and running Python projects. One binary replaces pip, pip-tools, pipx, poetry, pyenv, twine, and virtualenv: it resolves dependencies with a PubGrub solver, writes a universal uv.lock (schema version 1), installs wheels by clone or hardlink from a global cache, downloads CPython from python-build-standalone, and publishes distributions. The official interface is the uv command line, not the Rust library. The same workspace also ships the uvx alias, the Windows uvw launcher, the maturin-packaged PyPI distribution, and uv's own PEP 517 build backend.

System map

The cargo workspace at Cargo.toml includes every crate under crates/*, except scripts and the nightly-only crates/uv-trampoline. Product version 0.12.17 is shared by the uv, uv-version, and uv-build packages; most library crates are 0.0.84. Edition is 2024 and the MSRV is rust-version 1.96.0, licensed MIT OR Apache-2.0. The user-facing process starts at crates/uv/src/bin/uv.rs, which calls the unsafe uv::main in crates/uv/src/lib.rs. That function parses clap types from uv-cli, then runs an async dispatcher on a current-thread Tokio runtime. A separate PyPI wheel is built with maturin and a small Python launcher. Deployment artifacts are musl binaries produced by the Dockerfile (cargo auditable zigbuild --release) and GitHub Actions release workflows.

Feature catalog

Every user-facing verb is a clap variant on Commands in crates/uv-cli/src/lib.rs and is matched in crates/uv/src/lib.rs. Project commands (init, add, remove, lock, sync, run, tree, export, version, upgrade, format, check, audit) manage pyproject.toml workspaces and PEP 723 scripts. The pip namespace is a compatible interface for compile, sync, install, uninstall, freeze, list, show, tree, and check. Separate namespaces cover Python installs, pipx-like tools, publishing, authentication, the cache, workspaces, and a hidden PEP 517 build-backend shim. Many newer commands are gated by PreviewFeature flags and warn until --preview-features or UV_PREVIEW is set.

Data flow

User input enters as CLI arguments, environment variables, and config files, and is merged into typed settings before any network call. Project metadata is discovered from pyproject.toml workspaces or PEP 723 scripts, lowered into requirements, and solved against PEP 503/691 index metadata. The solver output becomes a uv.lock (version 1) which later commands treat as the source of installable pins. Artifacts are fetched into named cache buckets and linked into a virtual environment. Credentials are attached by HTTP middleware and must not be copied into new URLs, logs, or cache keys.

Behavior traces

Process startup always parses the CLI before the async runtime starts, loads configuration, and only then dispatches. uv lock discovers a workspace or PEP 723 script, solves with the universal resolver, and writes uv.lock. uv sync reuses that lock operation and then installs into the project environment. uv run syncs unless asked not to, rebuilds PATH, and waits on the child while forwarding signals. These three paths share interpreter discovery, the cache, and the registry client, but they differ in whether they mutate the lockfile, the environment, or both.

Testing signals

Tests are Rust integration tests first, driven by cargo-nextest and insta snapshots. The uv crate's tests/ tree is split by command family (it, pip, project, python, sync, tool, workspace, lock, lock_scenarios, build). A uv-test harness provides TestContext and the uv_snapshot! macro. CI runs nextest on Linux, macOS, and Windows after installing Python with uv python install, and uploads JUnit plus pending snapshots on failure. Feature flags carve out network, Git LFS, ecosystem, and Windows-registry tests so local runs can skip them. Packse scenarios and ecosystem lock snapshots cover resolver behavior that unit tests cannot.

Risk map

uv is designed to run on a trusted developer or CI machine while consuming untrusted package, Git, and archive bytes. The threat model in agents/references/threat-model.md is the security contract: locked operations must not change sources or hashes, credentials must stay in their realm, and archive members must not write outside the chosen root. Concrete risk in the code includes plaintext credentials by default, a non-atomic uv.lock write, build backends and uv run executing arbitrary code by design, and a very large command dispatcher that every CLI change touches. Optional features and preview flags also change security-relevant defaults between the cargo-dist binary and distro packages.

Extension points

uv does not load third-party Rust plugins. Extension is by adding a clap command variant, a settings field, a cache bucket, a preview flag, or a build-backend hook. Indexes, find-links directories, and keyring providers are the user-facing plugin surface. New resolver behavior plugs in through ResolverProvider and the PubGrub dependency provider. Documentation and the JSON schema are generated from the same types, so a new flag is incomplete until uv-dev regenerates the references.

Contributor handoff

Read AGENTS.md and CONTRIBUTING.md before editing. Prefer a narrow cargo nextest filter and insta snapshots over new unit tests or the full suite. Do not use the release profile unless asked. The Rust library is an unsupported entrypoint; behavior changes belong in the CLI and the command modules. Preview-gated behavior, generated docs, and the lockfile schema are the traps that most often produce a correct-looking diff that fails review. Security-sensitive edits should be checked against agents/references/threat-model.md, and privileged GitHub workflows must go through the automation dispatcher rather than pull_request_target.
